Pope Francis to make Fatima child shepherds saintsFátima (Portugal) (AFP) – Two young shepherds who had visions of the Virgin Mary 100 years ago in Fatima, a Portuguese site now a global draw for pilgrims, will be declared saints by Pope Francis on Saturday. The Argentine pontiff was greeted by a cheering crowd of hundreds of thousands when he arrived Friday in the central Portuguese town on a pilgrimage to mark the centenary of the first reported apparition on May 13, 1917. Catholic faithful from countries as varied as China, Venezuela and East Timor filled a 400,000-capacity esplanade that faces the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, falling silent when the pope called for harmony “among all people” in a prayer broadcast across the holy site.
