Access to safe medical and surgical abortion is a right that women have fought for and are still to fully achieve. They’ve kept fighting because the right to decide if and when to bear children is a cornerstone for women’s equality in society.
This struggle is being played out in Queensland today. A growing pro-choice movement supports repeal of the anti-abortion sections in the state’s criminal laws. Meanwhile, the state government hopes the issue will just go away.
The anti-abortion laws — sections 224, 225, and 226 of the Queensland Criminal Code — criminalise health services needed only by women.
Public opinion is clearly behind law reform. Seventy-nine percent of Queenslanders want abortion decriminalised, said an independent poll in May.
The question asked by many is: why isn’t this law reform a straightforward process in the 21st century?

AT LEAST three Labor MPs are supporting a new push to change the state’s 40-year-old abortion laws.
Angela D’Amore, Helen Westwood and Penny Sharpe have supported calls by a new lobby group to remove abortion from the criminal code.
The group, Pro Choice NSW, was set up after criminal charges were laid against a couple in Queensland who had used RU486, also known as the abortion pill.

Abortion provider Marie Stopes International yesterday began offering women the choice of medical and standard surgical abortions at its nine clinics in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration authorised the service to use RU486 under special licensing to give desperately ill people access to drugs not available in this country. The only provisos were that women had to be less than nine weeks pregnant and meet eligibility criteria covering standard surgical abortions, the group said.
Abortion pill approved in Italy
Italy’s drug regulation agency has approved the use of the abortion pill RU486, also known as mifepristone, prompting protests from the Vatican.
The Italian Pharmaceuticals Agency (AIFA) ruled late on Thursday that the drug would not be sold in pharmacies and only be administered by doctors.
The pill could only be taken up to the seventh week of pregnancy, it said.
On Thursday, the Vatican said it would excommunicate doctors who prescribed the drug and patients who used it.

Women who are prone to the common vaginal infection, bacterial vaginosis, are less likely to have a recurrence if they take hormonal contraception, whether it be birth control pills or Depo-Provera injections, new research suggests.
In the study, researchers examined medical records for 330 women with a mean age of nearly 25 who visited two sexually transmitted disease clinics in Baltimore between April 2005 and October 2006. About 133, or 40.3 percent, were diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis.
The women were prescribed a contraceptive, either progestin only (such as Depo-Provera) or estrogen-progestin combination (a birth control pill).

Italy has approved the use of the abortion drug RU-486, capping years of debate and defying opposition from the Vatican, which warned of immediate excommunication for doctors prescribing the pill and for women who use it.
The pill is already available in a number of other European countries. Its approval by Italy’s drug regulation authorities was praised by women’s groups and pro-choice organizations, which say the pill will provide women with an additional, noninvasive procedure.
It drew the immediate protest of the Catholic Church, which opposes abortion and contraception.
“That’s not how you alleviate human suffering, that’s not how you help women, that’s not how you help mankind,” Monsignor Elio Sgreccia, a senior church bioethicist, said in an interview Friday with Associated Press Television News.
High protein diet and foods

Early results of a trial in Uganda showed that circumcising men with HIV did not protect their female partners, and as circumcision does not benefit men who already have HIV the trial was stopped early to avoid further risk to the female participants.
The study is published in The Lancet and was conducted by lead and corresponding author Professor Maria Wawer of the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health at Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and colleagues.
