Breast cancer treatment and hospitals

Category: Canceradmin @ 1:38 pm

The mainstay of breast cancer treatment is Surgery. Adjuvant Hormonal therapy (with tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) is given when the tumor expresses estrogen receptors or progesterone receptors. Chemotherapy is given for more advanced stages of disease. Monoclonal antibodies are sometimes used, especially for HER2-positive tumors. Radiotherapy is given after Surgery to the region of the tumor bed, to destroy microscopic tumors that may have escaped Surgery. Treatments are constantly being evaluated in randomized, controlled trials, to evaluate and compare individual drugs, combinations of drugs, and surgical and radiation techniques. The latest research is reported annually at scientific meetings such as that of theAmerican Society of Clinical Oncology and St. Gallen, Switzerland. These studies are reviewed by professional societies and other organizations, and formulated into guidelines for specific treatment groups and risk category.

Pink Eye – Viral virus infection

Pink Eye Virus infection

Pink Eye Virus infection

Virus infection, or conjunctivitis, is redness and inflammation of the membranes (conjuctiva) covering the whites of the eyes and the membranes on the inner part of the eyelids. These membranes
react to a wide range of bacteria, viruses, allergy-provoking agents, irritants, and toxic agents, as well as to underlying diseases within the body. Viral and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis are common in childhood, but they can occur in people of any age. Overall however, there are many causes of virus infection. These can be classified as either infectious or noninfectious.

Viral virus infection:

The leading cause of a red, inflamed eye is virus infection. A number of different viruses can be responsible for the infection. Viral virus infection symptoms are usually associated with more of a watery discharge that is not green or yellow in color. Often, viral “cold-like” symptoms, such as sinus congestion and runny nose, are also present. The eyelids may be swollen. Sometimes looking at bright lights is painful. While viral virus infection may not require an antibiotic, those affected should see a doctor, as occasionally this form of virus infection can be associated with infection of the cornea (the clear portion of the front of the eyeball). This infection must be correctly detected and treated. Viral virus infection is highly contagious. Viral virus infection usually resolves in seven to 10 days after symptoms appear.

Swine Flu Vaccine Seems Safe: Experts

Category: Health Newsadmin @ 10:12 pm

Despite persistent public concern that H1N1 vaccines being tested might have unforeseen side effects, experts reiterated Thursday that so far, at least, the shots seem safe.

“There have been no red flags at all,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told HealthDay.

A trial designed to test the vaccine on healthy adults began on Aug. 7, while another trial involving children started Aug. 18.

“We wanted to wait about a week after the first trial to see if there were any glaring safety issues. There were not, so one-and-a-half weeks later, we started the trial in children,” Fauci said.

Breast cancer, a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast, is the most common type of cancer (other than skin cancer) among women.  Less than 1 percent of breast cancers occur in men. The risk of getting breast cancer increases with age, and inherited gene mutations or a family history of breast cancer may increase the risk.

Swimming Aids Asthma Symptoms In Children

Category: HIVadmin @ 9:37 pm

Research has shown that swimming aids asthma symptoms in children. The activity has been proven to be an effective non-pharmacological intervention for children and adolescents, according to a study in Respirology published by Wiley-Blackwell.

Researchers divided children between the ages of seven to twelve into two groups. One group underwent a six-week swimming program in addition to their regular asthma treatments. All of the children in the experimental program showed significant improvement in all clinical variables including symptoms, hospitalizations, emergency room visits and school absenteeism.

Controlling C Difficile In The Community Could Cut Infection Rates In Hospitals

Category: Health Newsadmin @ 7:28 pm

Clostridium difficile before they are admitted to hospital may be one way to help control rising rates of infection, says a doctor in today’s BMJ.

Recent data published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show that each year in England around 7,000 inpatients have MRSA infections and more than 50,000 inpatients aged 65 years and over have C difficile infections. Cases of C difficile rose by 5.5% in 2006, whereas MRSA cases fell by 4.3% over a similar period. And numbers are likely to continue rising because the population is ageing and the elderly are the most at risk, warns Dr John Starr.
